CHARLOTTE — Police on Saturday released graphic video footage showing the final moments before Charlotte-Mecklenburg police officers fatally shot Keith Lamont Scott.
The release of dashboard and body camera footage follows days of pressure from community activists and protesters hoping to shed light on what occurred in the moments leading up to the shooting, which has been the subject of disagreement between Smith’s family members and police since his death on Tuesday.
Police had previously refused to release the footage, saying it would compromise their investigation.
The video — which was accompanied by photos of a handgun purported to belong to Scott — almost immediately begins with officers yelling at Scott as he sits in a white sport-utility-vehicle.
After exiting the vehicle, Scott begins to walk backwards before he is shot by police. It is not immediately clear from the footage whether Scott is holding a gun or another object before he is killed.
